WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SWALLOWING DISORDER?
Some diseases, surgical interventions or psychological disorders can cause swallowing problems.
Few common signs include-
Food getting stuck in the throat
Coughing or choking bits of solid food, drink or even saliva that cannot pass easily
while swallowing and gets stuck in the lungs
Change of voice ( gurgly or harsh voice during or after eating or drinking)
Watery eyes or runny nose
Putting extra effort to chew and swallow
Prolonged feeding times or food refusal
Feeling a lump in the throat
Fever after having a meal
Recurring pneumonia, respiratory problem or chest congestion
Weight loss and dehydration for being unable to eat in good proportions
If you detect any such symptoms when swallowing food or liquid, you must consult a reputed speech pathologist. The conditions and signs mentioned above can also result in serious swallowing disorders in adults, including the risk of aspiration, poor nutrition and even isolation in social gatherings. People experiencing stroke or pain in the chest should undergo swallowing therapy after stroke to come back to the normal course of life.
